TAIPEI, Taiwan: Taiwan President Lai Ching-te asserted on Monday that China has no right to sanction Taiwan’s people or infringe upon their rights. This statement comes in response to China’s recent threats to impose the death penalty on “diehard” Taiwan independence separatists in extreme cases.

Addressing reporters at the presidential office in Taipei, Lai emphasized that China should engage in dialogue with Taiwan’s legitimately elected government and recognize its existence.

He warned that failure to do so would only lead to further deterioration of cross-strait relations. Lai’s comments underline Taiwan’s stance on sovereignty and the importance of mutual respect in diplomatic relations.

Lai also highlighted the democratic values upheld by Taiwan, stressing that any attempt by China to undermine these principles would be met with strong resistance. “The people of Taiwan have the right to choose their own path and future. China’s threats are not only a violation of human rights but also an affront to the democratic process,” he said.

Lai’s call for dialogue reflects Taiwan’s desire for peaceful resolution and stability in the region.
