Taliban Governor Dawood Muzammil Killed in Suicide Attack

MAZAR-I-SHARIF, AFGHANISTAN: The Taliban governor of Balkh province in Afghanistan who had a repute for fighting against Afghanistan-based IS militants, was killed in a suicide attack at his office here on Thursday, said the officials.

 

Mohammad Dawood Muzammil was considered to be one of the highest-ranking figures in the Taliban government since the Taliban grabbed power back in 2021. Local police spokesman Asif Waziri told AFP that two people, including the governor of Balkh Mohammad Dawood Muzammil were killed in an explosion on Thursday morning adding that the blast occurred on the second floor of his office situated in the provincial capital Mazar-i-Sharif.

 

He said that initial information showed it was a suicide attack, however, they were investigating how the suicide bomber reached the office. Two other people were also wounded during the blast, he said.

 

Earlier on Thursday morning, the explosion occurred soon after the Dawood Muzammil arrived in his office, said Khairuddin, who was injured in the incident and was under treatment in a hospital in Mazar-i-Sharif, adding that soon after the blast he fell on the ground.

Meanwhile, the government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid while taking to his twitter handle announced the death of the Governor and termed it an act of the enemies of Islam.

 

 

Dawood Muzammil was initially appointed governor of the Nengarhar province, where he led the fight against IS militants, before being moved to Balkh last year. — AFP/APP
