KABUL: Amid a growing water dispute between Iran and Afghanistan, the caretaker of Iran’s Embassy in Kabul announced that the Taliban has granted permission for a team of Iranian experts to inspect the reservoir of the Kajaki dam. The visit aims to address the ongoing tensions over water resources between the two neighboring countries.

Hassan Kazemi Qomi, the caretaker, emphasized the importance of respecting the 1973 treaty that outlines the allocation of water resources from the Helmand River, which originates in Afghanistan and flows into Iran. He called on the interim Taliban government to honor the agreement and fulfill Afghanistan’s obligations.

According to Qomi, agreements have been reached to allow Iranian experts to visit the region where the Kajaki dam is located. This visit will facilitate discussions and actions to ensure the proper release of water in line with the treaty. The diplomat urged Iranian officials to seize this opportunity and work diligently to secure the country’s water rights.

Tension Between Iran and Afghanistan

The tension between Iran and Afghanistan has escalated due to alleged violations of the 1973 water treaty by the Taliban. Under the treaty, Afghanistan is obligated to release 820 million cubic meters of water annually from the Helmand River. However, Iranian authorities have accused Kabul of withholding its share, leading to strained relations between the two nations.

Meanwhile, Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi addressed the situation at the joint border with Afghanistan, following reports of deadly clashes between Iranian border guards and Taliban forces. Vahidi stated that while Iran’s border guards are strong and determined in their duties, challenges can arise, particularly when the other side lacks a robust security system.

Vahidi reassured that the current situation in the border regions remains normal and calm. He also emphasized the need for Afghanistan’s rulers to effectively manage their forces and maintain vigilance. By issuing this warning, Iran aims to prevent any further border incidents and maintain stability along the shared frontier.
