NEW YORK: The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards took place in New York, with Taylor Swift leading the nominations across multiple categories. Rapper Meghan Thee Stallion hosted the event, which was packed with thrilling performances and unforgettable moments.

Taylor Swift, the billionaire singer, led the nominations with an impressive twelve nods, including eight for her collaboration with rapper Post Malone on the hit single “Fortnight.” Should she win “Video of the Year,” Swift would become the first artist to claim the award three years in a row.

Ariana Grande followed closely with seven nominations for her album “Eternal Sunshine,” sharing the spotlight with first-time nominee Sabrina Carpenter and the ever-popular Megan Thee Stallion. Chappell Roan also made waves, earning nominations for “Best New Artist” and “MTV Push Performance of the Year.”

The ceremony dazzled with a star-studded lineup, including performances by Shawn Mendes, Lenny Kravitz, and the often-controversial Katy Perry. Despite disappointing album sales following her collaboration with the infamous producer Dr. Luke—who has faced allegations of sexual misconduct and gender violence—Perry won the prestigious “MTV Video Vanguard Award.”

The MTV Awards 2024 featured a variety of categories. For “Video of the Year,” the nominees included Ariana Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love),” Billie Eilish’s “Lunch,” and Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Red.” The “Artist of the Year” nominees were Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Eminem, and SZA. The “Song of the Year” highlighted tracks such as Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” and Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.”

In the “Best New Artist” category, contenders included Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, and Teddy Swims, while “MTV Push Performance of the Year” celebrated emerging talents like Kalii and GloRilla.

The MTV Awards also honored excellence in technical aspects with nominations for “Best Direction,” “Best Cinematography,” and “Best Editing,” with Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight” nominated in many of these categories. The “Best Visual Effects” category included works from Eminem and Ariana Grande, while the “Best Art Direction” featured nominations for Charlie XCX and LISA.

As the night unfolded, the black carpet was abuzz with bold and innovative fashion choices. Karol G dazzled in a fiery dress, while Shawn Mendes teased his upcoming performance with a shirtless video on social media. American footballer and Swift’s current partner, Travis Kelce, publicly expressed his support, hoping she would take home multiple awards.
