Rio De Janeiro: Torrential rains in Brazil’s south have killed at least ten people while nearly dozens other were reported missing, said the authorities on Wednesday.

Floods in the state of Rio Grande do Sul have displaced more than 3,000 people in 100 different municipalities, many of whom have been shifted to shelters.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he would visit the affected area, which according to Governor Eduardo Leite was dealing with the worst disaster in the state’s history.

The rescue authorities said the work to locate the missing persons was continuing as more heavy rains are predicted in the south of the country.

Heavy rains have destroyed bridges and blocked major roads, leaving several communities in the area completely cut off.

Adriana Salete Gas of the city of Santa Cruz do Sul told local media that they have lost everything, everything.

Authorities have asked people to avoid areas near highways due to the risk of landslides, and those who live near rivers to evacuate.

Rescuers and soldiers since Tuesday, have been making efforts to free families trapped in their houses, while many stuck on rooftops due to rising water levels.

Damages estimated at $20 million

According to the state’s deputy governor, Gabriel Souza, damages have been estimated at $20 million.

Officials said at least 11 people have been wounded and nearly 20,000 affected in other ways by the floods.

Bad weather has affected the rescue efforts making it hard for officials to reach cut off places.

President Lula in a post on X, said that he would visit the area on Thursday to verify the situation.

The president had earlier said the federal government was sending help to tackle the disaster, which according to him was the result of climate change.

Brazil has suffered a string of recent extreme weather conditions.
