BANGKOK, Thailand: Thailand has detected an mpox case in a 66-year-old European man who arrived from Africa last week.

The country’s disease control officials are treating the case as potentially involving the Clade 1 variant. The man, who has residency in Thailand, landed on August 14 and visited a hospital the following day. Authorities are awaiting test results to confirm if the case is Clade 1, with results expected by Friday.

In response, officials are monitoring 43 people who may have had contact with the patient. The man had previously transited through a Middle Eastern country before arriving in Thailand. Since 2022, Thailand has reported 800 cases of mpox Clade 2 but has not yet encountered Clade 1 or Clade 1b variants.
