Thousands March in Rabat Demanding End to Israel- Morocco Relations

RABAT: Thousands of people staged one of the largest pro-Palestinian marches in Rabat, Morocco on Sunday since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, demanding an end to Morocco’s relations with Israel.

Protest demonstrations against Israel’s war in the Strip have repeatedly drawn thousands of citizens in Morocco since the war began more than two months ago.

More than 10,000 protesters waving Palestinian flags and holding banners and placards reading “resistance till victory,” “free Palestine” and “stop Moroccan government normalization with Israel.”

Morocco government agreed to strengthen relations with Israel in 2020, under an agreement brokered by Washington under then President Trump that also included the US recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed area of Western Sahara. Demonstrators in Sunday’s march called for a boycott of brands linked to Israel.

Although Israel and Morocco have not yet completed the process of establishing embassies in each other’s countries. As per media reports, Moroccan officials have continued to back the creation of a Palestinian state and have asked for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the protection of civilian population.

Israel continued its relentless attacks in the Gaza Strip, targeting areas of Jabalia on Sunday, as reported by local and Palestinian media.

The Gaza health ministry reported a grim escalation in casualties, with 166 Palestinian people killed in the last 24 hours, bringing the total Palestinian death toll to 20,424, mostly children and women. Many more have been wounded, with concerns regarding bodies trapped under rubble, leading to a displacement of almost all of Gaza’s 2.3 million people.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military admitted that nine of its soldiers were killed in the past day, marking 155 combat losses since the initiation of military operations on October 7.
