SYDNEY: Three football players in Australia’s A-League were arrested and charged on Friday amidst a betting scandal, accused of accepting “corrupt” payments associated with an organized crime figure.

According to authorities, a senior player allegedly orchestrated for teammates to deliberately receive yellow cards during matches in late 2023, in exchange for payments of up to $6,000. This scheme exploited betting markets where punters could place wagers on factors like the number of yellow cards issued during a game.

Australian media reported that the senior player involved was Ulises Davila, a 33-year-old attacker from Mexico who serves as the captain of Macarthur FC.
