KABUL: At least three security guards were injured when a suicide bomber targeted the provincial governor’s office in Zaranj, the capital of Nimroz province in western Afghanistan, here on Sunday, a spokesperson for the Taliban’s interior minister said.

Abdul Mateen Qani, the Taliban official, reported that the attacker detonated his suicide vest while attempting to enter the governor’s compound. Security guards, alert to the threat, had engaged the assailant and managed to wound him before he could inflict further damage.

As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but concerns arise as the Islamic State (IS) group’s affiliate has intensified its attacks in Kabul and other parts of Afghanistan since the beginning of the year. The IS group has notably targeted schools, hospitals, mosques, and other areas across the country over the past few years.
