DUBAI: TikTok has announced its latest advancements in AI transparency and media literacy, reaffirming its dedication to fostering safe and responsible content creation.

In collaboration with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), TikTok is poised to become the pioneering video-sharing platform to implement Content Credentials technology, automatically labeling AI-generated content (AIGC) upon upload from various sources.

Recognizing the challenges posed by AI-generated content, TikTok has deployed a robust system to bolster transparency. This includes automatically labeling all AIGC utilizing TikTok’s exclusive AI effects. In the past year alone, over 37 million creators have leveraged TikTok’s innovative labeling tools, facilitating a clear understanding of content origins.

Expanding its transparency initiatives, TikTok will soon extend Content Credentials to encompass all its content, ensuring that metadata remains attached even when downloaded. This feature empowers users and external platforms to authenticate content, promoting a universal standard of transparency across digital platforms.

In collaboration with MediaWise and WITNESS, TikTok is launching educational campaigns to enhance media literacy. These initiatives aim to equip users with the skills to critically evaluate online information, distinguishing genuine content from misleading AI-generated content. Throughout the year, TikTok, in partnership with MediaWise, will release a series of 12 videos focused on nurturing universal media literacy skills.

Dana Rao, General Counsel and Chief Trust Officer at Adobe, lauded TikTok’s efforts, stating, “With TikTok’s expansive community of creators and users worldwide, their participation in both C2PA and CAI is pivotal. In today’s digital landscape, ensuring content authenticity is paramount. This partnership signifies a significant stride towards achieving that objective.”

Alex Mahadevan, Director of MediaWise, expressed excitement about the partnership, saying, “Since launching our Teen Fact-Checking Network on TikTok in 2019, we’ve witnessed substantial engagement. We are eager to further empower individuals to discern fact from fiction online through these new initiatives.”

By joining the Adobe-led Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), TikTok is leading the way in adopting industry standards that promote content authenticity. This collaborative endeavor is expected to progressively increase the amount of auto-labeled AIGC on TikTok, thereby enhancing user experience and trust.
