ISLAMABAD/BRUSSELS: TikTok, the Chinese social media company, on Thursday pledged to do more to address disinformation on its platform in European Union (EU) countries by broadening its fact-checking measures, adding more safety features and spurred by the role played by state-controlled media and the war in Ukraine.

TikTok acknowledges need to strengthen efforts

By providing its progress report on what it did over the course of the previous six months to adhere to an enhanced EU code of practise on disinformation, TikTok acknowledged the need to strengthen its efforts.

Caroline Greer, Director of government relations and public policy, said in his blog post.”While we’re proud to be providing this granular detail for the first time, we recognize that more work must be done. In the coming months, we’re investing in several initiatives,”

According to her, TikTok would increase the number of state-controlled media labels it uses, step up its efforts to combat misinformation about Ukraine, broaden the scope of its fact-checking program across Europe to cover additional languages and increase the volume of claims it fact-checks. Additionally, the corporation would improve its advertising policies to combat misinformation better.

TikTok claimed that in the past six months, it removed 191 adverts that violated its ban on political figures placing advertisements on its platform and connected people to authoritative sources of information on the Holocaust, COVID-19, the war in Ukraine, and other topics.
