WASHINGTON: OceanGate, operator of the Titan submersible that imploded after it went missing in the North Atlantic on 18 June has announced the suspension of all exploration and commercial operations.
The company provided crewed submersible vessels for exploration, industry, tourism, and research.
The disappearance of the Titan and its 5 passengers near the famous wreck of the Titanic in the North Atlantic started a massive search and rescue operation involving the US, Canadian, and UK naval coordination.
Four days later, the remains of the vessel were discovered 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic about 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. It was soon concluded that all inside the vessel had been instantly killed when the submersible imploded at a depth of more than two miles below the surface.
Submersible implosion
Experts say the implosion occurred at the same time the submersible lost radio contact with the launch.
The multi-millionaire CEO of the company Stockton Rush was among those killed in the incident.
The submersible’s wreckage, among which are presumed human remains, has been shifted to St. John’s, a port town in eastern Canada. US and Canadian officials have started investigations into the cause of the incident.
