KARACHI: The Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) is observing a countrywide shutter down strike against the recent increase in prices of petroleum products and skyrocketing inflation, today.
Markets and hotels are closed in different areas of Karachi, including Kharadar, Old City, Burns Road, Baldia Town, Etihad Town, and surrounding areas. However, the traffic is functional as per usual.
TLP announcement led to closure of schools
Meanwhile, due to the uncertain situation in the city, many schools remained closed. Furthermore, protest is being held on the road leading from Qaim Khani Colony Baldia to Orangi Town. Protesters have blocked all the main roads by burning tires and placing barriers. A similar situation was seen Raees Amrohi area in Orangi Town, where the road was blocked with burning tires.
Meanwhile, business remained suspended in Mirpur Mathelo, Dadu, Obaro, Daharki, Khuzdar, and Ghotki. Another protest rally was held in the Sadiqabad and Khanpur regions of Rahimyar Khan. A day earlier, local traders in Haripur announced to keep their business centers functional today, February 27.
Malik Wajahat Mehboob Awan, the leader of the Young Tajir Group, claimed that local merchants had unanimously ignored a religious party’s call for a strike and would keep their businesses open on Monday.
He claimed that because local merchants had already been severely impacted by the economic crisis the nation had been experiencing for some months, they decided to boycott the demand for shutter-down protests and would not participate in any such activity.
He added that joining such protests would add to the hardships of traders. He advised the religious party to show political might using another method rather than forcing the traders to face further losses. Asking his fellow traders not to respond to any such call and keep their shops open without any fear, Wajahat vowed to protect the traders’ rights against any adventurism with the help of a local administration bound to ensure the security of the business community of the city.
