WASHINGTON: Warner Bros Discovery Inc. (WBD.O) has said it had struck an agreement with Tom Cruise, one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, to produce original and franchise theatrical films in the current year, western media reported on Wednesday.

The move partnership with Cruise marks a coup for Warner Bros Motion Picture Group’s co-chairs, Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, and also fulfills Chief Executive Officer David Zaslav’s oft-stated wish to work with top talent in front of the camera and behind the camera.

Tom Cruise has starred in movies like “Edge of Tomorrow”, “The Last Samurai” and “Rock of Ages” for Warner Bros.

The firms says that Cruise and his production company will have offices on the Warner Bros Discovery lot in Burbank. Actors and writers from Hollywood went on protest last year, asking for higher wages and safety against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in film production.

The dual protests shut down a large portion of movie and TV production, stopped late-night talk shows and compelled broadcast networks to fill television slots with repeats of reality shows.

The protests led to a delay in Cruise’s next Mission Impossible movie as production house Paramount Global also bore the brunt of one of the longest work strikes in the entertainment industry history in the US.
