ISLAMABAD: Kane Williamson has been left out of New Zealand’s ODI squad for their upcoming three- match series against Pakistan starting from March 29.
The Kiwis have unveiled a 13-player lineup with Tom Latham stepping up to lead the team. Fresh faces Muhammad Abbas and Nick Kelly have earned their maiden call-ups.
Kyle Jamieson will also sit out the ODI series as selectors choose to manage his workload after his participation in the Champions Trophy and the T20I series against Pakistan. Meanwhile, Matt Henry continues to recover from an injury sustained during the Champions Trophy, resulting in his absence from the squad.
Quality time with family
Williamson’s absence is particularly notable, especially after he recently opted out of central contracts for the 2024-25 season and stepped down from his white-ball captaincy to extend his international career. Despite this, he emphasised his unwavering dedication to representing New Zealand. “Playing for my country is a privilege I hold dear, and my desire to contribute to the team is as strong as ever,” he remarked. “Yet, my life outside cricket has shifted—spending quality time with my family and cherishing moments together, whether at home or away, has taken on greater significance.”

While the specifics of Williamson’s unavailability remain unclear, it might relate to his obligations in both the IPL and PSL.
Journey as commentator
Currently, he hasn’t been picked by any IPL team but has begun his journey as a commentator and analyst, sharing his insights on Star Sports.
He is expected to miss the first three matches of the PSL, which kicks off on April 11, due to his commentary commitments. The PSL has reportedly arranged for a partial replacement for him, as he was selected by the Karachi Kings in the Supplementary Category.
This season marks Williamson’s debut in the PSL, having previously participated in the IPL, Vitality Blast, SA20, and the Caribbean Premier League, along with seven appearances in the Champions League.
