ISLAMABAD: Oscar nominations for 2023 will be announced later, and several Academy records will likely be broken.
Due to the release of new versions of Top Gun, Black Panther, and Avatar, there may be more sequels than ever up for best picture nominations. Irish performers and films are expected to have a good showing, and Marvel may receive its first acting nomination.
The event, scheduled on March 12 this year, will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once will likely be prominently featured when the nominations are announced on Tuesday, given their success at previous events.
The likelihood of seeing Elvis, Tar, The Fabelmans, All Quiet on the Western Front, and The Whale is high.
Avatar reflects sequel surge.
The number of sequels nominated for best picture in a single year may be the highest on the 2023 shortlist. The contenders include Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water, and possibly even Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. That’s a lot of colons.
Just two more nominations would be required to break the record for the most sequels released in a single year.
This is partial because 10 slots are now available in the best picture category, which is more significant than earlier. There have previously been eight sequels nominated for best picture, but not two in one calendar year. Follow-ups to The Godfather and The Lord of the Rings, as well as Toy Story 3 and Mad Max: Fury Road, was previously omitted.
No female directors?
This year, there will likely be no female nominees for best director. They could include Todd Field (Tár), Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans), Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin), Baz Luhrmann (Elvis), and Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick).
There may also be a nomination for the male duo Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan – known as Daniels, their movie for Everything Everywhere All At Once. That could mean female directors such as Sarah Polley (Women Talking), Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), and Charlotte Wells (Aftersun) are shut out.
The Oscars have recently done considerably better in this regard, though. Chloé Zhao and Jane Campion, the two most recent female winners in the category, both won for their films, The Power of the Dog in 2022 and Nomadland in 2021, respectively.
