ISLAMABAD/MEXICO: A Mexican prominent journalist, who is best known for his criticism of the country’s president, survived an assassination attempt.

Journalist Ciro Gomez, an ardent critic President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, tweeted that two motorbikers shot and injured him on Friday, just 200 meters from his house, with a clear intention of assassinating him.

“I was driving at that time and informed the authorities immediately after the incident. The armor plating on my van saved my life,” he said and posted pictures of bullet holes in his car.

While condemning the attack in his daily morning conference, President Lopez Obrador said, “I want to send my support and solidarity for Ciro Gomez. Incidents like this can cause political instability, and Ciro represents public opinion.”

President Obrador never minces words in his disdain for journalists, and on Wednesday, he said that listening to journalists criticizing his government was ‘dangerous for their health.’ “Listening to Ciro can get you a brain tumor,” the Mexican president said.

According to official data, 13 journalists were killed in Mexico this year. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said that Mexico had become the world’s most dangerous workplace for journalists.
