Top UN Official in Saudi Arabia for Sudan Talks

RIYADH:  The United Nations’ top humanitarian official has arrived in the Saudi city of Jeddah for talks aiming for a truce between Sudan’s warring top generals, a UN spokesperson said on Sunday.

“Martin Griffiths is in Saudi Arabia at the moment, and the aim of his trip is to engage in humanitarian matters related to the crisis-hit Sudan,” spokesperson Eri Kaneko added.

Fighting that broke out in the African country on April 15 between the paramilitary forces and the army has killed over 700 people, most of them civilians, injured thousands and driven a mass migration of Sudanese and foreign citizens.

A UN official added the UN top official would also meet representatives of the two generals at the heart of the crisis. According to a joint US-Saudi statement the meetings in Jeddah as “pre-negotiation discussion”.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has assumed a high-profile role in evacuations from the crisis-hit Sudan, dispatching commercial and naval vessels to bring thousands of people across the Red Sea from the Sudanese city of Port Sudan.
