LAHORE: Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous province, has grappled with significant challenges in its healthcare system, prompting the government to launch initiatives aimed at revolutionizing medical services.
Under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, improving healthcare facilities has become a top priority. The government has taken bold steps to address issues such as inadequate infrastructure and medicine shortages.
Key initiatives include the establishment of fully-equipped field hospitals strategically located to provide essential medical care in remote areas. Additionally, the introduction of a home delivery program for medicines aims to streamline access to prescriptions, particularly for those unable to visit pharmacies regularly.
Punjab’s healthcare transformation plan encompasses the revamping of Basic Health Units (BHUs) and Rural Health Centres (RHCs), along with initiatives to provide free medicines in government hospital emergencies and enhance diagnostic capabilities through a central pathology lab.
Significant investments exceeding Rs. 15 billion have been allocated to healthcare projects, covering hospital construction, equipment procurement, and staff recruitment. An additional Rs. 26 billion has been approved, underscoring the government’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare services.
Moreover, plans to introduce a transparent health insurance system, building upon previous initiatives like the health card, aim to ensure deserving citizens receive healthcare benefits without the risk of embezzlement or scandal.
