DHAKA: Transitional Bangladesh’s government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will be inaugurated on Thursday, the country’s army chief said.
Yunus will head a 15-member transitional team, all of whom will be sworn in late Thursday, said General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Wednesday.
Zaman on Monday announced the transitional government after Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India following weeks of violent protests against her government.
As per reports around 400 people died in the protests. Yunus will return to the country from France on Thursday.
In a statement released ahead of his return from Europe, Yunus appealed for restraint and non-violence. “I fervently appeal to everybody to stay calm. Please refrain from all kinds of violence,” Yunus said. “Be calm and get ready to build the country. If we take the path of violence everything will be destroyed.”
A tribunal in Dhaka on Wednesday acquitted Yunus and three top officials of Grameen Telecom in labour law violations case.
Following Hasina’s ouster, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was also released from house arrest and had become a significant figure in the current crisis.
Political prisoners are being freed, and protests have led to extensive property damage and disruptions across Dhaka.
