CAIRO: Seventeen people were killed, and 29 others were injured on Thursday in a collision between a truck and a bus on a motorway in southern Egypt, according to the country’s health ministry.

The accident occurred on the road between the cities of Kharga and Asyut, and 26 ambulances were dispatched to the scene to provide emergency medical assistance. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

Egypt’s roads have a reputation for being dangerous, with poor maintenance and drivers frequently breaking speed limits and other traffic regulations.

Egypt with highest rates of road fatalities in world

The country, with a population of more than 105 million, has one of the highest rates of road fatalities in the world.

In 2021, official figures showed that there were 7,000 deaths caused by traffic accidents in Egypt.

Authorities have taken steps to try to improve road safety, including increasing penalties for traffic violations and launching awareness campaigns, but accidents remain a persistent problem.
