ISLAMABAD: President-elect Donald Trump has reiterated his suggestion that Canada should become the 51st US state, just hours after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.
In a statement via social media, Donald Trump claimed that many people in Canada love being the 51st state of the US.
Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned.”
There would be no tariffs
He said, “If Canada merged with the US, there would be no tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!.”
Trudeau jetted to Trump’s Florida house unannounced that month following the president-elect threatened to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products. Donald Trump is also warning of 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico over failures by both countries to curb the flow of unlawful immigrants and illicit drugs from those nations into the US.
End of a near-decade-long tenure
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday, marking the end of a near-decade-long tenure that began in 2015. Trudeau stated he would step down as soon as the ruling Liberal Party chooses a new leader.
He also resigned as the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.
“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister,” Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa, following a protracted political crisis during which senior Liberal allies urged him to quit.
“This country deserves a real choice at the next election,” he said, adding that ongoing “internal battles” within the party had led him to question whether he remained the best option for Canadians moving forward.
