WASHINGTON: Former President Donald Trump leads Vice President Kamala Harris by five points in Texas, according to a new poll, as the US presidential election 2024 draws near.

The survey, conducted by Florida Atlantic University/Mainstreet Research, shows Trump garnering 50% support from registered voters in the traditionally red state, while Harris trails at 45%.

An additional 2% of respondents supported another candidate, and 3% remained undecided. The poll also indicated that Trump maintains the same advantage among likely voters.

While the race is close among women, where both candidates are tied, Trump holds a significant lead among men, with 53% to Harris’s 42%. Among white voters without a college education, Trump dominates with 63%, compared to Harris’s 31%. The gap narrows with college-educated voters, where Trump leads 56% to 42%.

The poll also highlighted a competitive Senate race, with incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz holding a 3-point lead over Democratic challenger, Rep. Colin Allred.

The results of this survey align with a separate poll released by the New York Times/Siena College, which shows Trump leading Harris by 6 points in Texas. Trump won the state by more than 5 points in the 2020 election against President Joe Biden.

The Florida Atlantic University poll was conducted from October 2-6 among 811 registered voters in Texas, with a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.

With less than a month to go before Election Day, the survey underscores Trump’s continued strength in Texas, a state that has long been a GOP stronghold.
