NEW YORK: Republican Donald Trump is leading among likely voters in the battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll released on Monday.
With just six weeks to go before the November 5 presidential election, Trump outperformed US Vice President Kamala Harris, capturing 50% to her 45% in Arizona, 49% to her 45% in Georgia, and 49% to her 47% in North Carolina.
These three states are among seven critical swing states that could determine the outcome of the 2024 presidential election between Trump, a convicted felon, and Harris, a former prosecutor aiming to become the first woman US president.
Trump, who served as president from 2017 to 2021, is running for the White House again after his 2020 loss to Joe Biden, an outcome he continues to falsely attribute to voter fraud. The 78-year-old former president is currently facing federal and state criminal charges related to his attempts to overturn the election results.
Harris, 59, whose nomination has re-energized the Democratic Party following Biden’s decision not to seek re-election, presents an opportunity to build a broader coalition among young voters, women, and even some Republicans.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points in Arizona (based on 713 respondents), plus or minus 4.6 points in Georgia (682 respondents), and plus or minus 4.2 points in North Carolina (682 respondents).
