WASHINGTON, USA: Donald Trump questioned whether Democrat Kamala Harris is genuinely Black or using race for political gain, in an interview that sent shockwaves through the 2024 presidential race. Speaking at the National Association of Black Journalists conference in Chicago, Trump claimed Harris initially promoted only her Indian heritage and later identified as Black. “She was always of Indian heritage, and was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black,” Trump said, questioning, “So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?”

Harris, the first Black, female, and South-Asian-heritage vice president in US history, faced Trump’s ongoing personal attacks, including accusations of anti-Semitism despite her marriage to a Jewish-American. President Joe Biden’s administration swiftly condemned Trump’s remarks. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated, “No one has any right to tell someone who they are, how they identify,” calling Trump’s comments “insulting.” This controversy marks another escalation in the heated rhetoric of the 2024 presidential campaign.
