TUNIS, Tunisia: Tunisia’s coast guard has recently recovered the bodies of 16 migrants off the coasts of Maloulech, Salakta, and Chebba, marking yet another tragedy in the ongoing Mediterranean migrant crisis.

According to Reuters the bodies, discovered over the weekend and into Monday, were found in a state of decomposition, making identification impossible, as reported by Houssem Eddine Jebabli, a senior official in the national guard.

This incident follows a series of tragic events at sea, including the sinking of a boat last month near Djerba, which resulted in the deaths of at least 15 Tunisians, among them three infants, with another 10 individuals still unaccounted for.

The situation is dire as Tunisia has increasingly become a key departure point for migrants from both the country and sub-Saharan Africa seeking a better life in Europe, overtaking Libya in this grim role. The region’s ongoing migration crisis highlights the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and effective policy responses to prevent further loss of life.
