Ghannouchi a former speaker of the parliament was arrested in April over different charges and accusations. The former speaker of the country’s parliament had appeared in court in February on terrorism charges following being accused of calling police officials “tyrants”.

The case is one of several charged by officials against him, whose Ennahdha party was the largest in the Tunisian parliament before President Saied dissolved the parliament in July 2021.

Ghannouchi was arrested and remanded in jail last month following remarks warning that eliminating the different points of view from which his political party originated, might lead to a “civil conflict”.

He is among more than twenty of Saied’s opponents and including former top ministers and businessmen, arrested since February. In addition to his jail term, Ghannouchi was also fined 1,000 dinars, local press reported.
