ISTANBUL: Foreign Minister of Turkiye Hakan Fidan on Wednesday said that his country would soon join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Fidan said this at a joint press conference with Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in Ankara.

He added that after completion of the work on the legal text, Turkiye will submit the declaration of official intervention before the ICJ to implement this political decision.

He said Turkiye will always support the people of Palestine in all circumstances.

The ICJ in January ordered Israel to stay away from any acts that could fall under the Genocide Convention and to ensure its forces commit no genocidal acts against Palestinians after South Africa blamed Israel for state-led genocide in Gaza.

President Tayyip Erdogan in January, said that Turkiye was providing documents for the lawsuit at the ICJ, also known as the World Court.

Israel and its Western allies termed the allegation of committing genocide as baseless. A final verdict in South Africa’s ICJ case in The Hague could take years to come.

Brazil and Colombia are also supporting South Africa’s complaint against Israel to the ICJ.

According to the Gaza health ministry, Israel’s relentless bombardment campaign since October 7, has killed at least 34,568 Palestinians, mostly women and children in the besieged territory.
