NEW YORK: Turkiye’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, arrived in New York on Monday to participate in the UN Security Council meeting focused on Palestine.

According to Turkish diplomatic sources, Fidan will be present at the UN Security Council session dedicated to the topic of Palestine, scheduled to convene in New York on January 23.

Alongside his participation in the council meeting, Fidan is expected to engage in bilateral meetings during his visit.

The meeting comes in the backdrop of heightened tensions in the region, with Israel having reported more than 25,100 casualties in the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7.

In response to the attack, Tel Aviv claims nearly 1,200 people were killed. The Israeli offensive has resulted in approximately 85 per cent of Gaza’s population being internally displaced, facing acute shortages of essential resources such as food, clean water, and medicine.

Furthermore, more than half of the enclave’s infrastructure is reported to be damaged or destroyed, according to assessments by the United Nations.
