ANKARA, Turkiye: Turkey’s parliament has condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent address to US lawmakers, labeling it a “democratic disgrace” and calling for an end to Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza.
The resolution, adopted on Saturday, criticized Netanyahu’s speech before the US Congress, describing it as a performance filled with falsehoods that embolden acts of aggression against Palestinians.
The resolution expressed regret that a democratic institution like the US Congress would facilitate such a speech instead of restraining Israel’s actions. It praised members of Congress and other voices who opposed Netanyahu’s address, highlighting their courage and common sense.
Following Netanyahu’s widely applauded speech on Wednesday, the Turkish parliament urged all political decision-makers, including the US Congress, to take effective measures to halt the bloodshed in Gaza. The resolution called for immediate pressure on Israel to agree to a ceasefire and support efforts to hold Tel Aviv accountable for alleged war crimes.
Since the October 7 cross-border attack by Hamas, Israel’s military response has resulted in the deaths of over 39,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children according to reports. These actions have led to a humanitarian crisis and accusations of genocide, currently being reviewed by the International Court of Justice.
