ISTANBUL: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan left for Budapest on Sunday for a one-day official visit.

Accompanied by a delegation of ministers, the president will attend Hungary’s founding day celebrations and watch events at World Athletics Championships hosted by Hungary and attended by Turkish athletes, according to a Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah.

Erdogan is among the distinguished guests of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a close friend at the helm of Turkiye’s major ally in Europe.

During the trip, both leaders will discuss all aspects of bilateral ties as well as regional and international matters.

President likely to hold sideline meetings

Turkish president is also expected to hold sideline meetings with other counterparts, including Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, who will attend the celebrations and events.

The Emir of Qatar and the presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan, as well as high officials from Bosnia-Herzegovina, were also likely to attend the celebrations and events.

Ties between Turkiye and Hungary were elevated to the level of strategic partnership in 2013 after both countries set up the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council. The friendly relations have gained momentum in every sector in recent years.
