Türkiye Gets its First Female Admiral

ANKARA:  For the first time in the history of the Turkish Navy, a woman has been promoted to the rank of admiral.

Supreme Military Council meeting Thursday appointed Staff Col. Gokcen Firat as Rear Admiral in the Turkish Naval Forces.

The committee chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan decided in a closed-door session.

Supreme Military Council has been established in Türkiye to discuss the military agenda promotions, dismissals, and other defense-related matters.

Türkiye Gets its First Female Admiral

According to Turkish media reports, Firat, 45, who graduated from Naval War College in 1998 became Turkey’s first-ever female ship commander in 2004.

Overall, The Supreme Military Council promoted 63 officers to generals or admirals, taking the total number in the Turkish military to 286.

The former commander of the 2nd Army Corps Metin Gurak, also became the new chief of the general staff of the Türkiye forces.

The position was vacant since his predecessor, Yasar Guler, became the country’s new defense minister.

According to the Turkish presidency’s communication directorate, chiefs of the air and land forces were also replaced.

Selcuk Bayraktaroglu and Ziya Cemal Kadioglu will now serve as the country’s new land and air forces commanders.
