Turkiye Saves Over 180 Irregular Migrants in Its Territorial Waters

ISLAMABAD: According to Turkiye’s Coast Guard, it rescued as many as 181 irregular migrants on Monday. The total included many migrants whom the Greek authorities denied entry and through illegal means forced into Turkish territorial waters.

Turkish Coast Guard teams carried out two operations in the waters off Ayyacik’s coast, which is in Turkiye’s northwestern province of Canakkale. In the first operation, 39 irregular migrants were present in an inflatable boat. In a second operation, a total of 54 migrants were rescued.

A total of 88 irregular migrants were rescued in Mugla province. All of these migrants had been pushed by who were pushed back by Greek.

As many as 77 irregular migrants were rescued by coast guard teams of Turkiye in two separate encounters off the Marmaris coast. In one incident, 37 migrants were saved, while in the other, 40 others were rescued while two migrant smugglers were also apprehended.

The report also stated that 11 irregular migrants were also rescued off the coast of Datca; all of whom had been pushed back by Greek authorities.

Migrants fleeing from persecution and war have been using Turkiye as a major transit point before heading to Europe to find a place to begin a new life. Media outlets and rights groups have frequently reported on Greek authorities’ rights violations including that of irregular migrants.
