ANKARA: Turkiye and Somalia have inked a cooperation deal on defense amidst ongoing tensions in the Horn of Africa, particularly concerning a contentious agreement between Ethiopia and the breakaway region of Somaliland.
Turkiye’s Ministry of Defense announced the deal news on its official account on X, a social media platform. Somali Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur visited Ankra and held a meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Yasar Guler. During the meeting, they singed the Defense and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement.
Later in a joint press conference, Minister Nur stated said that the agreement they have signed today encompasses collaboration in counterterrorism efforts and military-economic cooperation. “We are confident that this agreement will significantly benefit Somalia,” said.
Minister Guler characterized the meeting between the defense leaders as “productive” and expressed optimism that the deal would enhance bilateral military relations between the two nations. He emphasized Turkey’s support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, reaffirming Somalia’s importance as a key partner in Africa.
