Twenty Mine Staff Killed in South Africa Traffic Accident: Officials

JOHANNESBURG: Local authorities said on Sunday that as many as 20 staff of mining giant De Beers were killed in a traffic accident in South Africa.

The bus was carrying staff from the Venetia mine, one of the major diamond mines in South Africa, said a senior official Vongani Chauke in Limpopo province. Vongani Chauke added that the bus came into collision with a vehicle.

The official told the media the road accident occurred at about 1600 GMT, some 25 kilometres from the mine, in the area of Musian. As per media reports, the cause of the mishap has not been ascertained.

AFP reported that South Africa has one of the most advanced road infrastructures in the region, but also has also one of the worst road safety records.

The Venetia mine accounts for more than forty percent of South Africa’s annual diamond production, employing over 4,300 staff including many locals.
