BAMAKO: The Malian army has said that two of its posts came under attack in the north and west of the country, Westen media reported on Thursday.
An Al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group has already claimed responsibility for one of the attacks.
The army in a statement on social media said that it had repulsed the attack by terrorists in Mourdiah in the west. The military also reported casualties among the attackers but did not give any further details.
Mali army repulsed attack
Earlier on Wednesday, the army claimed to have prevented a large-scale attack in Acharane, in the northern Timbuktu region.
The Al-Qaeda-linked jihadist alliance Support Group for Islam and Muslims (GSIM) claimed responsibility of the attack on social media.
Mali’s ruling junta, which took power in 2020, faces different security challenges throughout the country.
Along with jihadist insurgency, northern Mali is also facing the threat of an offensive by Tuareg and Arab separatist groups.
The separatist groups captured the city of Timbuktu in 2012 before losing it to jihadists who destroyed its famous mausoleums.
By the end of August, the north of Mali had seen a resumption of attacks by Tuareg armed groups on the Malian army.
The increase in attacks coincides with the ongoing withdrawal of the UN stabilization force MINUSMA. The military rulers also asked French anti-jihadist forces to leave the country last year.
