WASHINGTON: In the early hours of Sunday, a horrific mass shooting unfolded in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Baltimore, leaving two people dead and 28 others injured. The incident occurred during a street party, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement officials.

Acting Police Commissioner Rich Worley, speaking at a press conference, revealed that authorities received multiple distress calls around 12:30 am (04:30 GMT) regarding the shooting. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered several victims with gunshot wounds.

Tragically, an 18-year-old woman was found deceased, while a 20-year-old male victim was also confirmed to have lost his life, as stated in a police report. The wounded victims were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals, with three individuals currently in critical condition.

Commissioner Worley acknowledged the extensive nature of the crime scene, noting that the investigation and evidence collection process would require considerable time. The primary focus now lies on identifying the suspect responsible for the attack and determining the motive behind such a devastating act.

Baltimore Mayor Denounces Shooting Incident

Expressing his outrage, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott addressed reporters at the crime scene and denounced the shooting as an absolute tragedy that could have been avoided. He emphasized the urgent need to address the rampant proliferation of illegal firearms on city streets, enabling individuals unfit to possess such weapons to obtain them.

Mayor Scott vowed to spare no effort in apprehending the “cowards” responsible for inflicting harm on innocent bystanders, causing the loss of two precious lives. The community’s safety remains a top priority, and local authorities are committed to ensuring justice is served.

The United States, known for having more firearms than its population, continues to grapple with a distressing trend of gun violence. According to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), the nation recorded at least 44,357 gun-related deaths in 2022, including 24,090 suicides. This alarming incident in Baltimore marks the 337th mass shooting, as defined by the GVA, this year alone—where four or more individuals are injured or killed in a single gun-related incident.
