LIMOGES: A tragic incident in France resulted in the death of a teenage scooter rider and his adult passenger after an encounter with the police. According to police sources, the moped fled upon seeing a police patrol preparing to stop it, leading officers to pursue the vehicle before deciding to abandon the chase in Limoges, western France.

After the police disengaged, the moped allegedly ran a red traffic light and collided with a car, resulting in the instantaneous death of the 16-year-old rider and injuries to the adult passenger. The latter succumbed to his injuries while in the hospital. The car involved in the collision was carrying a father and his young children, who were left “shocked and traumatized,” according to Limoges city hall.

Powerful Yamaha TMAX Scooter Involved in Incident

The incident took place on General Leclerc Avenue, a major thoroughfare lined with residential buildings, where sawdust and crosses marked the positions of the bodies. The police sources mentioned that the moped involved was a powerful Yamaha TMAX scooter, and the officers decided to halt the pursuit, deeming the situation too hazardous.

Local authorities in Haute-Vienne have deferred commenting on the case to the Limoges prosecutor’s office, which is expected to release a statement later. Meanwhile, the mayor of Limoges, Emile-Roger Lombertie, expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

The unfortunate event occurred just weeks after France witnessed widespread rioting following the police shooting of an unarmed 17-year-old of Arab origin during a road stop in late June. The death of the teenager, named Nahel, triggered unrest across the country, with clashes between rioters and security forces and incidents of looting reported in various places.
