DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have welcomed a landmark ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which declared Israeli settlements on Palestinian territories as violations of international law.

Issued on Friday, the ICJ’s non-binding judgment stated that “the transfer by Israel of settlers to the West Bank and Jerusalem, as well as Israel’s maintenance of their presence, is contrary to article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention.” This decision marks a significant legal setback for Israeli policies in the occupied territories.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed its rejection of any measures aimed at altering the historical and legal status of occupied Palestine. The ministry condemned actions that defy international resolutions, warning that such practices could exacerbate regional tensions and undermine efforts towards peace and stability in the Middle East.

Emphasizing the importance of supporting initiatives that advance the peace process, the UAE called for an end to Israel’s activities deemed illegal under international law, which it argues obstruct the realization of an independent Palestinian state.

GCC Secretary-General Jassem Mohamed Albudaiwi echoed these sentiments, asserting that the ICJ’s decision reinforces the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people under international law and United Nations resolutions. He criticized Israeli settlement activities and territorial alterations imposed by Israeli authorities, labeling them as illegitimate and lacking recognition both regionally and internationally.

Albudaiwi reiterated the GCC’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the borders defined by the pre-1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital. The Secretary-General emphasized that the Occupied Territories rightfully belong to the Palestinian people.

The ICJ’s ruling comes amid ongoing hostilities, including Israel’s recent military actions in Gaza since October 7. Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War, territories which Palestinians view as integral to their future independent state.
