ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Monday telephoned Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Syed Asim Munir, and discussed defence and military relations between the two countries.

The UAE president reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s unity and stability.

The discussion focused on enhancing cooperation and joint work between Abu Dhabi and Islamabad in defense and military affairs, with an emphasis on strengthening these ties for the mutual interests of both nations, according to the UAE news agency WAM.

During the call, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed assured General Munir of the UAE’s continuous support in achieving stability within Pakistan. The COAS, in turn, expressed gratitude and extended his well wishes for the UAE’s ongoing development, progress, and prosperity.

Pakistan-UAE relations

The Pakistani military has not yet released an official statement regarding the conversation between the two leaders. The reaffirmed commitment from the UAE is expected to provide a boost to Pakistan’s stability efforts.

It is worth noting that General Munir had previously visited the UAE, along with Saudi Arabia, shortly after assuming the position of COAS. The visit signifies the importance of the UAE’s relationship with Pakistan, particularly in the realm of defense and military cooperation.

In addition to discussing bilateral ties, Pakistan is also seeking the UAE’s support in unlocking a crucial tranche from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to revive the Extended Fund Facility program. The UAE, along with Saudi Arabia and China, had pledged assistance to Pakistan earlier this year, covering a significant portion of the funding deficit.
