DUBAI: President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan has met with a delegation from Afghanistan led by Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani, WAM state news agency reported on Wednesday.

During the meeting, at Qasr Al-Shati in Abu Dhabi, bilateral relations and stability of the region came under discussion.

The talks focused on development, economy and support for reconstruction and development in Afghanistan.

The Taliban government took power in August 2021 when the US-supported government collapsed and its leaders fled into exile.

No country has recognised the Taliban government although some states, including China, have kept their embassies open in Kabul.

China has accepted Bilal Karimi, a former Taliban spokesperson, as an official ambassador to Beijing despite its non-recognition of the current rulers of Afghanistan.

Wang Wenbin, spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, explaining Beijing’s acceptance of a Taliban envoy earlier had said China hopes that Afghanistan will further respond to the expectations of the global community, building an inclusive and open political framework, implementing prudent and moderate domestic and foreign policies.

India also reopened its embassy in Kabul in June 2022, less than a year after it was closed, and has engaged with the Taliban even though it does not officially recognise the current government.
