UAE, US Leaders Discuss Situation in Gaza, Bilateral Ties at COP28

DUBAI: UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has held discussions with US Vice President Kamala Harris on several issues on the agenda of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), Arab media reported on Saturday.

They discussed cooperation between the two sides in renewable energy and sustainable development, focusing on joint initiatives in these fields, Emirates News Agency reported. The meeting, which took place on Saturday at the COP28 venue in Expo City Dubai, also discussed the historic partnership between the United States and the UAE, exploring means to advance relations in various sectors. Additionally, a number of regional and local matters of mutual interest were also discussed, especially the recent developments in the Palestinian territories.

The significance of working towards a truce in Gaza, protecting civilian population, providing secure channels to provide humanitarian help to the people of Gaza without obstruction, stopping their displacement, and identifying a clear political horizon based on the two-state solution to obtain regional peace and stability were also highlighted.

Meanwhile, US Vice President Kamala Harris has said that too many innocent Palestinians have been killed in Gaza as Israeli artillery and war planes bombarded the strip on Saturday after the collapse of a truce between Hamas and Israel. Speaking in Dubai, UAE Kamala Harris said that too many innocent Palestinian people have been killed in the Gaza Strip and insisted that Israel must respect humanitarian law. She told the reports, “Honestly, the scale of civilian population suffering, and the pictures and videos coming from the Gaza, are very devastating,”.

Israeli air strikes have targeted buildings in Hamad City, a Qatari-funded housing development on the outskirts of Khan Younis in Gaza, Arab media reported on Saturday. Hamad City was Inaugurated in Gaza in 2016. The first flats over 1,000 were given to Palestinian people whose house were destroyed in the war between Hamas and Israel two years earlier.
