Uganda: Ebola Epicenter Lockdown Lifted, High Alert Remains

ISLAMABAD: A two-month lockdown imposed by the Ugandan government in two districts, which are the epicenter of the country’s Ebola outbreak, was lifted on Saturday. Experts are still cautious about whether the outbreak will end anytime soon.

The East African country on 20 September announced the outbreak. Since that time, 142 cases have been confirmed, while there have been 56 fatalities. The capital Kampala is also part of the area where Ebola cases are being witnessed.

Lockdown imposed on 15 October

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni placed the central districts of Kassanda and Mubende under lockdown on 15 October.

Vice President Jessica Alupo announced on Saturday that the curfew and all restrictions on the movement were being lifted with immediate effect. Both Kassanda and Mubende had been subjected to a curfew between sunset to sunrise, with marketplaces, cafes, and worship places closed, as well as personal travel banned.
