James Cleverly made the remarks on the same day that Wang Yi met Nikolai Patrushev, secretary of Russia’s Security Council. Moscow announced that Russian President Putin would meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping for talks in Beijing in October.

He said that they knew that President Xi Jinping has a significant influence on the world including Vladimir Putin. He hoped that China would call for Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine.

He added, “Beijing has made, I think, key messages regarding the respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, regarding the non-use of nuclear arms”.

He further said that they supported these messages and hoped that the messages would be repeated when Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi travels to Russia.
