LONDON: British Foreign Secretary David Cameron called on Qatar Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani on Thursday, Qatar News Agency reported.
During the meeting, they discussed cooperation between the two nations, particularly in the realm of development aid, and addressed regional issues such as the situation in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories.
Emphasizing the crucial need to enhance international efforts to prevent an escalation of conflict in the region, Sheikh Mohammed stressed the top priority of achieving a ceasefire in Gaza. The ongoing Israeli bombardment and military campaign in the Strip have resulted in the deaths of at least 25,700 people, with approximately 70 percent of the casualties being women and children, according to health ministry officials in Gaza.
Qatar plays a pivotal role as the main mediator between the governing movement in Gaza and Israeli officials during the conflict.
In November, Qatar played a key role in securing a seven-day pause in fighting, facilitating the release of 110 Israeli and foreign hostages from Gaza in exchange for 240 Palestinians being freed from Israeli detention.
