LONDON: UK-based Cordoba Foundation on Friday hailed the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) earlier today verdict that ordered Israel to ensure its forces do not commit genocide in Gaza and to improve the humanitarian situation.
The ICH verdict is a “truly historic decision”, said Anas Altikriti, the CEO and founder of the Cordoba Foundation.
Altikriti emphasized the significance of the ICJ accepting the case brought by South Africa, stating that future criticisms of Israel cannot be labeled as antisemitic.
“I think what is most significant is the fact that the ICJ accepted the standing of the case brought by South Africa,” Anas Altikriti said.
“And that alone, I believe, opens many, many doors now. Also, amongst the rulings today, on the provisional orders, the mentioning of genocide, the fact that the ICJ acknowledged the fact that Israel was killing civilians,” he said in his statement.
The British scholar added that “all these issues I think, are extremely significant.”
He highlighted the importance of the ICJ’s acknowledgment of Israel killing civilians and deemed the case’s file a historic document that should be widely disseminated and utilized for various purposes.
Responding to Israel’s assertion of the right to defend itself, Altikriti noted that such a response is consistent with past reactions and emphasized the importance of observing how other states, including the US, UK, France, and Germany, respond not just in words but in actions.
