LONDON: A recent report indicates a concerning global decline in mental health, with the UK ranking second as one of the unhappiest countries.  Sapien Labs, a research group, conducted an extensive survey named “Mental State of the World,” encompassing over 400,000 individuals across 71 nations.

The findings reveal a lingering impact of the pandemic on mental health, with the UK scoring notably low on the Mental Health Quotient (MHQ) scale at 49, just above Uzbekistan, the lowest scorer. Notably, 35% of Britons reported feeling distressed.

Interestingly, the study identified a correlation between wealth and unhappiness, with wealthier nations tending to score lower on the scale.

The happiest countries on earth are developing nations like Tanzania, Sri Lanka, and the Dominican Republic, who undoubtedly know how to enjoy life more than many developed countries.

Conversely, Australia, Tajikistan, Brazil, South Africa, the UK, and Uzbekistan ranked among the worst performers.

The findings indicating poor mental well-being across Europe and North America suggest a significant trend. Despite the potential for negativity, the authors encourage the UK to view this report as a catalyst for action.

They emphasize positive aspects such as London’s recognition as Europe’s premier city and Glasgow’s vibrant music scene. This survey contributes valuable insights to the global dialogue on mental health.

The documented decline in mental health on a global level underscores the need for heightened attention to mental well-being in various nations, including the UK. While further research may be necessary to fully understand the complexities of this issue, it underscores the importance of prioritizing mental health initiatives worldwide.
