LONDON: The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on Myanmar military-linked units and enterprises accused of being involved in “serious human rights violations” and the oppression of civilians.
The sanctions specifically target military divisions and two state-owned enterprises affiliated with Myanmar’s security forces, said the British Foreign Office on Thursday.
In the three years since the military coup, Britain has sanctioned a total of 25 individuals and 33 entities under its Myanmar sanctions regime.
“Three years after the coup, we are intensifying our efforts to pressure the Myanmar military to halt its brutal repression of the people,” read the Foreign Minister’s statement.
The UK’s Foreign Office also announced the release of a joint statement, joined by eight countries and the EU, condemning Myanmar’s military regime for its “continued violence against and repression of” its own citizens.
