LONDON: The British government said on Wednesday that UK armed forces “played their part in attempts to prevent further escalation” after Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel.
In a statement from the Ministry of Defence, the British government said that two Royal Air Force Typhoon jets and a Voyager air-to-air refuelling tanker were deployed to assist in deterrence efforts late Tuesday.
Although British jets did not engage directly with any targets during the operation, the ministry emphasized their contribution to broader efforts aimed at preventing further escalation in the already volatile Middle East.
Defence Secretary John Healey condemned Iran’s missile actions, reaffirming the UK’s commitment to Israel’s right to defend itself against threats.
“British forces have this evening played their part in attempts to prevent further escalation in the Middle East,” Healey stated.
Healey visited Cyprus on Wednesday, where Britain maintains a significant military base. He met with UK troops stationed there, who are preparing for the potential evacuation of British citizens from Lebanon amidst rising tensions following Israel’s ground offensive against Hezbollah.
The UK government is making contingency plans for the evacuation of nationals, particularly in case Beirut’s airport closes due to the fighting.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy confirmed that the first charter flight to evacuate British nationals from Lebanon has already departed, with additional flights scheduled as necessary.
“We have arranged another flight for tomorrow (Thursday), and further flights over the coming days for as long as there is demand and it is safe to do so,” Lammy stated on social media platform X.
Lammy urged British citizens still in Lebanon to register with the UK foreign ministry and to leave the country immediately.
