UNITED NATIONS: At the United Nations General Assembly, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss achieving lasting peace in Ukraine.
The meeting, which also involved Andriy Yermak, a senior aide to President Zelensky, focused on principles for a comprehensive, fair peace based on the UN Charter, according to Ukraine’s foreign ministry. Both sides expressed gratitude for China’s support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
While Wang Yi reiterated China’s stance that diplomacy is the only solution to the Ukraine conflict, the discussions also touched on future bilateral relations and trade development. Plans for further high-level diplomatic engagements were also discussed.
Prior to meeting with Ukraine, Wang Yi held talks with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, reaffirming the strong relationship between China and Russia. The Chinese foreign minister highlighted that despite the “ups and downs” in their relationship, the two nations are committed to good-neighborly relations. Both sides discussed the “Ukraine crisis” and broader diplomatic issues.
China has maintained its neutral position in the Ukraine conflict, though it faces accusations from the West of supporting Russia through economic and political ties. China and Russia have fostered what they describe as a “no-limits” partnership, growing stronger as they challenge what they perceive as Western dominance in global affairs.
